Aso Oke, made to feel free

There are some clothes you put on because you have somewhere to be, and then there are the ones you put on because you feel like going out. The kind that makes you stand in front of the mirror for a second longer, rub some lotion on your arms, pick up your keys and think, yeah, I’m good to go.

The Seun Cutout Top feels like the latter.
It is named after Seun, who designed it, and if you know him, that probably tells you something already. He is the kind of person who enjoys himself. Happy, a little whimsical, always ready for a good time, a young man enjoying Lagos as it comes, with all its noise, heat, late nights and unexpected plans. So perhaps it makes sense that the top feels that way too.
It started with a simple idea: make something loose.

Aso Oke is beautiful, but it is not exactly the lightest material to wear. Its thickness gives it character, but it can also make clothing feel heavier than you would like, especially in a place like Lagos where the weather does not always care what you planned to wear.The Seun Cutout Top approached that differently.

Instead of wrapping the body up completely, the design leaves the arms open. The sleeveless cut creates space around the body, allowing the fabric to sit loosely rather than cling. It gives the top room to breathe, and gives the person wearing it room to move.

The name is almost too straightforward. There was no distant reference or elaborate story behind it. It was simply named after the person who designed it.
But the more you look at the piece, the more the name makes sense. There is something of Seun in its looseness, in the decision to leave the arms bare, the refusal to make Aso Oke feel overly formal, it is in the fact that you can wear it to a date, a night out with friends, or wherever the evening happens to take you.

The top does not seem interested in behaving like every other Aso Oke piece. Neither, perhaps, is its designer. And that is what makes the Seun Cutout Top feel like more than a name attached to a product, It feels personal.

The Story Behind the Bello Duffle Bag

I had just arrived at the airport when I remembered my power bank was still buried somewhere inside my handbag. You know that annoying moment when you’re already in the check-in line and suddenly you’re digging through receipts, lip balm, and chargers while pretending you’re not making a mess? I stepped aside for a minute and crouched near my suitcase, trying to find it quickly before the line moved too far ahead.

That was when I saw the bag.
It was sitting beside a suitcase a few feet away from me. Black. Structured. With side pockets that looked like they had actually been used, not added just for design. The kind of bag that makes you think, this person travels often.

I must have looked at it for longer than I realized because the man standing beside it smiled and said, “You like the bag?”
I laughed and said, “I was just noticing it.”

“It’s one of ours,” he replied.
That was how the conversation started.
He told me they made the Bello Duffel Bag for people who were always moving. At the time, many of their customers were travelling frequently to places like Ghana, the US, and other cities outside Nigeria, so they wanted a bag that could handle real travel. Not just a bag that looked good in a photo, but one that could carry a laptop, documents, chargers, a change of clothes, and all the little things that seem to multiply once a trip begins.

As we spoke, he opened one of the side pockets to take out his boarding pass. Everything looked exactly where it was supposed to be.
What I found interesting was that he talked about the bag almost the way someone talks about a travelling companion. “If you travel a lot,” he said, “you stop wanting a bag that slows you down.”

I think that sentence stayed with me because it explained the bag better than any product description could.

Then he ran his hand across the fabric and mentioned that it was crafted from Aso Oke. In the middle of that busy airport, surrounded by passports, boarding announcements, and rolling suitcases, that detail suddenly felt important. Aso Oke is a fabric we usually associate with ceremonies, family gatherings, and special occasions. Seeing it in a travel bag felt like a quiet reminder that home can travel too.

The Bello Duffel Bag

I asked him about the name, and he laughed before answering. “Bello was the surname of a friend whose family travelled all the time,” he said. “Their bags were always packed, so when this one was created, the name just felt right.”

By then the check-in line had started moving again. People were lifting suitcases, checking passports, calling relatives, and hurrying toward the departure gates. He picked up the Bello Duffel Bag,and gave me a small nod before joining the line.

I never found out where he was flying to.
But as I watched him walk away, I realized the bag had already done what it was designed to do. It carried movement without losing a sense of belonging. It looked ready for another city, another airport, another hotel room, and still somehow felt connected to where it came from.

A few minutes later my own boarding call was announced. I picked up my suitcase, finally found the power bank, and headed toward my gate thinking about that conversation. Some bags are made to be stored in a wardrobe between occasions.
