The Fabric We Couldn’t Leave Alone

13/10/26 01:27 PM By BAMIGUGU

There are some materials you grow up around so often that you stop noticing them. You know what they feel like, what they look like, where you will usually find them, and even when you are expected to wear them. Aso Oke was one of those materials for us.

Growing up around Yoruba culture meant growing up around Aso Oke. It was present at weddings, celebrations and important occasions, usually brought out when there was something worth dressing up for. It was familiar, beautiful and deeply connected to where we came from. But somewhere along the way, we started to wonder why something with so much history seemed to have such a small place in everyday life.

We Knew Aso Oke

Aso Oke is a handwoven Yoruba textile, made in narrow strips and brought together to create a fabric with a very distinct character. It has structure. It has texture. It has weight. More than that, it carries memory.

For generations, we have known what Aso Oke represents. We know the ceremonies it belongs to, the ways it is styled and the moments that call for it. But familiarity can sometimes create rules around a material. You begin to associate it with a particular kind of clothing, a particular kind of event, a particular kind of importance.

We started asking ourselves a simple question: what happens when we stop treating Aso Oke as something reserved for special occasions?

What If It Could Be Everyday?

That question sits very close to the heart of BAMIGUGU.
We believe heritage shouldn’t be admired from a distance. It should be lived, carried and woven into everyday life. For us, working with Aso Oke is part of that belief. We are interested in what happens when something deeply familiar is given room to take on a new form. Not to erase where it comes from, but to allow it to keep moving, That became one of the ideas behind Ade Oba.

Then Came Ade Oba

Ade Oba launched in 2024, and the name means King’s Crown. The collection began with a desire to rethink what everyday dressing could look like when Aso Oke was at the centre of it.

We wanted the collection to feel considered and connected rather than like a collection of unrelated pieces. There was something almost uniform about the idea: a shared visual language, a sense that the pieces belonged together while still having their own identities.
And then there was the decision that would bring everything together: black.

Why Black?

Because black is easy to live with. It moves through a wardrobe without asking too many questions. It works with colour, but it doesn’t need colour to make sense. It can feel formal or relaxed, understated or striking, depending on what you put around it.

For Ade Oba, black also helped us move Aso Oke away from the idea of occasion dressing. The fabric could still hold its history and character without immediately announcing that it was meant for a special event. It became less about dressing for an occasion and more about creating clothes you could actually live in.

The Material Still Has a Voice

Of course, working with Aso Oke means you cannot simply treat it like any other fabric. Its structure affects what you can do with it. Its texture changes how a piece feels. Its weight influences the way a garment sits and moves. The material becomes part of the design conversation, and sometimes, it tells you what it wants to be.

That is something we enjoy about working with it. We are not trying to force Aso Oke into a shape it was never meant to take. We are learning what the material already has to say and finding ways to bring that into contemporary clothing. The result is clothing that can feel familiar and new at the same time.

There is something freeing about taking a material we usually save for certain days and allowing it to become part of ordinary life. Not because tradition needs to be escaped but because tradition can have more than one future.

Look Closer

A lot of the thinking behind our work lives in details that are easy to miss.
A crafted button. The way a pocket is placed. The construction of a garment. The proportion of a silhouette. The choice to introduce natural materials where they make sense. These details may not always announce themselves, but they change how a piece feels when you look at it closely.

This is where our approach to fashion begins to meet our approach to craft. We are interested in the things that make a piece feel considered, not just finished.

There Is a Sustainability Question Here Too

There is also something important about what happens when a material with a long cultural history continues to have a place in contemporary life.

For us, that means working with local craft, making use of materials available to us and creating pieces that are designed to be worn beyond one particular moment. It means thinking about whether something will remain useful, whether it can move through someone’s wardrobe and whether it can still feel relevant years after it was made.

We don’t think sustainability is only about how something is produced. There is also something to be said for making things people want to keep wearing because when heritage becomes part of everyday life, it has a better chance of remaining part of the future.

Beyond Ade Oba

Ade Oba was one answer to the question we had been asking. What happens when Aso Oke leaves the box we have placed it in? What happens when it becomes something you can wear on an ordinary day, style in your own way and return to again and again? We are still figuring that out.

And perhaps that is what makes working with Aso Oke so interesting. It is a material with a history, but it does not have to remain in the past. It can change shape. It can enter new conversations. It can sit beside modern silhouettes, unexpected details and completely different ways of dressing. There is still so much we want to explore.

So, Why Do We Work With Aso Oke?

Because it is ours.

Because we grew up around it and know how much meaning it carries. Because the hands and knowledge behind the craft deserve to remain relevant. Because a material with this much history should have room to keep evolving.

But most importantly, we work with Aso Oke because we don’t want heritage to sit still. We want to see it worn, carried and lived in. We want to see what happens when something deeply rooted in African culture is allowed to move forward without losing where it came from.

Ade Oba was never meant to be the end of that conversation. It was simply one of the ways we chose to begin it. And we are only getting started.
